Half-Life's visuals aren't the worst out there, but their age is painfully obvious and a challenge to ignore. However, despite still being a champion of immersion, its more obvious characteristics - like visuals, audio, and gameplay - are a different story. The fact that a 25-year-old game can still have such an impact in this area is very telling of its quality and the amount of thought that was put into it by the developers all those years ago. When it comes to storytelling and immersion, Half-Life is still one of the best in the industry. Once the player reaches the surface, most of their time is spent scaling cliffs and making their way through destroyed buildings, all while the story continues to unfold around them with nothing but incredibly brief loading screens to separate each major area. ![]() ![]() While this typically involves simply traversing the ventilation system to move around locked doors, there are often more challenging puzzles to solve, like turning off an electrical system to keep a flooded room from being a massive environmental hazard. Navigating the research facility is a puzzle of sorts, as the player is tasked with finding creative ways to reach new areas.
